Remediation Information

Several performance factors are used to determine the need for remediation. These factors may include any of the following: teacher evaluation, CIP benchmark performance, SOL test results (if applicable), attendance, PALS results, Algebra Readiness Test and achievement test results (if applicable). The goal of the remedial program is to give a child the assistance he/she needs to master the SOL objectives for his/her grade level.

After School Remediation
This 24-week program operates one - two hours after school in a child's home school. Students who participate in this program can be remediated in one or two core subjects. Successful completion of this program will be determined by regular attendance and documentation of progress by the instructor as related to SOLs. Parents should give careful consideration to this option, as it may not be appropriate for students who are involved in after school activities. Parents are responsible for transportation.

In-School Remediation
This program operates in conjunction with the regular school day. This program is for students who need remediation in one core subject*. Students will be remediated during non-core programs that could include music, physical education, library, exploratories, and/or recess. Specific scheduling will be left to the discretion of the building principal. Successful completion of this program will be determined by regular attendance and documentation of progress by the instructor as related to SOLs.

Private Remediation
The parent/guardian must submit a request in writing to the Director of Instruction. The remediation program must be conducted by a certified teacher and include a minimum of 20 clock hours of instruction.

Retention
The parent/guardian may opt to have a child repeat the grade in lieu of participation in any of the three remedial programs.

 

* If a child needs TWO core subjects, only one may be done during the school day. The second subject must be done before or after school.
