Alleghany Highlands Public Schools

Planning for the event is part of AHPS’ ongoing effort to provide students and their families with essential resources to explore career opportunities and make meaningful connections to the community. 

AHPS aims to support high school students in successfully transitioning to adulthood. The event will also offer tailored support for students with disabilities as they prepare for their future pathways. All students are invited to attend.

“We are thrilled to launch this initiative and provide students with the tools they need to plan their futures,” said Dr. Jason Conaway, director of special education at AHPS. “Our goal is to make this an annual tradition that fosters connections and provides essential resources for students, families, and the broader community.”

Students can explore several career pathways, including employment, military enlistment, and educational opportunities that will help them make informed decisions about their futures. 

Additionally, students and families will gain access to valuable resources and support systems designed to assist in their transition to adulthood, ensuring they have the tools needed to succeed after graduation. 

Community involvement and support will be vital to the success of the career and transition fair. The school division encourages the community to share ideas and resources that will positively impact students and their families. Suggestions, materials, or recommendations from the community will be an essential part of the planning process.  

AHPS is also seeking participation from community partners, including individuals, businesses, and organizations that can provide valuable opportunities to students. Input and feedback from these valued partners will help ensure the event effectively services students and their families.  

As a bonus, a complimentary breakfast will be provided to attending students, funded through a grant from The Alleghany Foundation, while adults may purchase breakfast for $8.

“We are thrilled with the potential of this event!  We hope to see our students there,” said Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS.

AHPS was created through the July 2022 merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center. Alleghany County and the City of Covington jointly fund the school division. AHPS serves approximately 2,700 students.
