Posted on 03/11/2025
AHPS PreK/VPI program helps prepare four-year-olds for success in school.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Jeter-Watson Elementary School.
Families interested in being part of the VPI program at any AHPS elementary school should attend.

VPI is a state-funded program designed to provide high-quality preschool education to children who meet certain criteria, ensuring they gain the skills needed to thrive in school. Parents must register their children for the VPI program in AHPS elementary schools.

Parents may bring information such as recent physicals, shot records, and birth certificates to begin the process of determining enrollment eligibility. Those interested may contact their division home school for more information or visit smart2start.org for more information on the VPI program.

For convenience, parents may apply online at https://families.smart2start.org. Information on applying can also be obtained by contacting the elementary school in their home attendance zone. Timely applications are appreciated.

AHPS was created through the July 2022 merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center. The school division is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington. AHPS serves approximately 2,700 students.

AHPS news and events are regularly updated on Facebook at AHPublicSchools and the division website www.ahps.k12.va.us. School starts for students on Aug. 13 for the 2025-2026 school year.
