AHPS Again Offering Summer Meals for Area Children

LOW MOOR — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will again offer free summer meals to children through the Summer Food Service Program during summer 2026.

Meals are free for all children and teens 18 years old and younger, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability or age.

“Summer meals help ensure children in our community continue to have access to nutritious food even when school is not in session, while also helping families reduce grocery costs during the summer months,” said Debra Bucker, AHPS food services supervisor. “We encourage all families to take advantage of this free program 

Meals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the following locations:

Weekly Non-Congregate Meal Distribution Sites

Meal Pick-Up Time: 11 a.m. to noon.


Dates: June 4 -July 30.


Distribution Day: Every Thursday.


Exception: Meals will be distributed Wednesday, June 17, and Wednesday, July 1, due to holidays.

- Sharon Elementary School

Hybrid Meal Sites

Covington Middle School

Dates: June 4- July 1

- Breakfast: 8 - 9 a.m.

- Lunch: 11 a.m.- noon

Jeter-Watson Elementary School

Dates: June 4- July 1

- Breakfast: 8 - 9 a.m.

- Lunch: 11 a.m. - noon

Alleghany Highlands YMCA

Dates: Monday-Thursday, June 8-July 30

- Breakfast: 8:30-9 a.m.

- Lunch: 12-12:30 p.m.

- Meals will be sent home with children on Thursdays.

Note: Hybrid sites offer on-site meals and take-home meals.

After summer school ends July 1, Covington Middle School will close as a meal site. Beginning July 9, Jeter-Watson Elementary School will continue serving as a non-congregate meal distribution site for the remainder of July.

An on signup form for families is available on the AHPS website under Important information. The deadline to submit a form is Thursday, May 21.
