Braylee’s winning design was chosen from among several outstanding entries that were submitted by students at Callaghan Elementary. AHPS leaders view the contest as a way of showcasing students’ creativity and artistic talents.
Braylee’s design is now featured in the school division’s 2023 Holiday Card, which will be mailed by Superintendent Kim Halterman to many community leaders and supporters of AHPS. AHPS Central Office staff and School Board members judged this year’s entries.
“We were very impressed with the quality of the entries we received. The beautiful blue sky over the happy village in Braylee’s design simply warmed our hearts,” said Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS.
Braylee brimmed with excitement when she found out she had won this year’s design competition. A member of the AHPS Central Office delivered the exciting news on Wednesday, Dec. 20, and Callaghan Elementary Principal Lisa Hansford was on hand to offer congratulations.
“Seeing Braylee excel in the Christmas card contest fills me with immense pride. Her talent is remarkable, and I can’t wait to see where her creativity takes her in the future. Congratulations to Braylee on this well-deserved achievement,” Hansford said.
Gina Middleton serves as Braylee’s teacher at Callaghan.
“Braylee gives a hundred and twenty percent effort in everything she does. Her handwriting, drawings, and coloring are always top notch! Braylee has such a kind heart. I am so proud of her and for receiving this recognition that she greatly deserves,” Middleton said.
The Holiday Card Design Contest will become an annual tradition for AHPS. The contest will be rotated among schools each year. Callaghan Elementary was chosen as the inaugural school for the contest. Students from another school will be given an opportunity to submit entries next year.
AHPS serves approximately 2,700. The school division is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington. The school division was formed when Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center merged on July 1, 2022.
