AHPS Still Seeking Students for VPI/Pre-Kindergarten Program
Posted on 04/17/2024

LOW MOOR — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools is still enrolling students for its  PreK/Virginia Preschool Initiative program for eligible four-year olds.

For convenience, parents may file an application online at https://families.smart2start.org. Information on filing an application can also be obtained by contacting the elementary school the child would attend.

In particular, AHPS is seeking applications for children who would attend a VPI class at Sharon and Jeter-Watson Elementary Schools. The school division’s ability to provide VPI programming is largely based on enrollment. Parents interested in enrolling a four-year old in the program should visit or contact Sharon (540-863-1712) or Jeter-Watson (540-965-1420) as soon as possible.  Timely applications are appreciated. The school division began sharing information with parents about enrollment opportunities in February.

Eligibility for the VPI program is based on income and other factors. Parents must provide a birth certificate and other documentation.  The school division plans to make decisions about its ability to offer VPI programs in different areas as soon as possible.

AHPS was created through the July 2022 merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center. The school division is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington. AHPS serves approximately 2,700 students.

AHPS news and events are regularly updated on Facebook at AHPublicSchools and the division website www.ahps.k12.va.us. School starts for students on Aug. 23.
