AHPS Facilities Closed to Public Use This Summer

LOW MOOR — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools facilities will be unavailable for public use this summer due to preparations for the consolidation of students in the fall.

The unavailability of school facilities is expected to begin on June 5 and continue until late summer.

Restricting use of school facilities will allow AHPS to carry out moving needs as well as address building and maintenance projects.

When AHPS begins the 2023-2024 academic year in August, students in grades 6-8 will attend one middle school, and students in grades 9-12 will attend one high school. The high school will be named Alleghany High School and students will be housed at the current AHS building on Mountaineer Drive in Valley Ridge. The middle school will be located at the current Covington High School building on Lexington Avenue in Covington. It will be named Covington Middle School.

The school division will continue to work with AHPS athletics programs and local recreation leagues to assist students, but additional outside requests for the use of facilities this summer will likely not be considered. Moving-related tasks, maintenance needs, and summer school will utilize a variety of school facilities.

Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS, expressed their appreciation for the public’s cooperation and understanding as the school division continues to prepare for the 2023-2024 school year.

“We are grateful for the hard work of our team. There are a variety of projects to coordinate this summer, and we appreciate our community’s understanding of the unique nature of this time in our history,” said Halterman and Snead-Johnson.

The Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Division is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington. The joint school division, which serves approximately 2,700 students, was formed through the July 2023 merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center. School division news and events are regularly updated on its Facebook page, AHPublicSchools.
