Out-of-Zone and Out-of-District Update

Out-of-Zone and Out-of-District Update
Posted on 05/01/2023

While we know the redistricting process is not yet complete, our goal is to provide families with as much information as we can as efficiently as possible.  Therefore, we have made related attendance zone transfer request forms accessible for your use here online and at our schools.  We anticipate that the school board may finalize a redistricting plan at its May 8, 2023, regular meeting.

If you wish for your child to be considered for an out-of-attendance zone school and you live in the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools service area (Alleghany County including Iron Gate and Clifton Forge as well as Covington City), please complete the attendance zone transfer form.   Please note that we will consider all requests received by June 1.  Notifications of acceptance will not begin until June 2 and they may continue throughout the summer.  Individuals may also submit forms after June 1, but requests received earlier will be prioritized.  We will be as efficient as possible.  If your request is related to childcare, please complete the companion childcare form as well.

If you wish for your child to be considered for an out-of-district school because you live outside of the AHPS district in an area such as Bath County, Craig County, Greenbrier County, Botetourt County, Rockbridge County, or elsewhere, please complete the out-of-district request form.   Please note that we will consider all requests received by June 1.  Notifications of acceptance will not begin until June 2 and may continue throughout the summer.  Individuals may also submit forms after June 1, but requests received earlier will be prioritized.

You may be familiar with the attendance zone transfer processes of the historic Alleghany County Public Schools and Covington City Public Schools. The procedures used by AHPS are similar.  Given that AHPS is larger than ACPS and CCPS, the procedures now require additional coordination to function as smoothly as possible, and we appreciate your help.

It remains our intention to be as flexible with families as practical while using division resources wisely to meet the needs of students.  We understand that many students have unique situations, including students who live between two homes, and our process affords families the opportunity to share important details about their living situation, child care, employment, or other factors that may affect their desire to attend a specific school so that these factors may be considered.  It is important that families place the information they would like considered on the appropriate zone transfer form.  As also indicated above, please complete the childcare form if your request is child care related.

AHPS attendance zone transfer processes are informed by AHPS Policy JC.  An update to this policy was proposed at the April 17, 2023, regular school board meeting with additional information available on the related school board informational memo.

Individuals with questions about the proposed elementary school attendance zone for a specific address should contact Laura or Christina at 540.965.1808.  Individuals with feedback for the school board on the proposed redistricting may continue to access the Redistricting Feedback Form through May 1. When using this form, please limit your feedback to redistricting.

As always, the school board also encourages public comment at its regular meetings, and you may reach school board members via email as well.  As a reminder, parents with email contact and phone contact listed in our student information system (PowerSchool) also received this information directly on April 19.  You may also find it helpful to know that the forms mentioned herein are now available in our Frequently Used Forms section under the parents header on our website.

Some questions submitted on the redistricting feedback form are about school zone transfer processes, and we hope this information is useful to answer those inquiries.  If you have additional questions, please contact your child’s school or the school your child would attend.  We understand this process has some new features, and we welcome your questions.

Thank you for your interest in our school division!  We appreciate the opportunity to work and serve students in our beautiful community.
